Why do people love it? Guess half of it is the “praising this makes me look like an expert” thing. Second thing is that the album has helluva concept by giving dancehall a facelift. Plus: the album works. Switch and Diplo use baby cries as an instrument, surf guitars (whatever this is I just copied that from somebody), use effects on the toasting and stuff. They worked with dope artists, blabla. Everything on point.

The concept aint new though. Its what you do in this online mash up scene. Its what Buraka Som Sistema did with Kuduro, taking a genre and tuning it with all the sounds and genres that are hot right now. Like Radioclit did with Funana in the mix I just posted (Radioclit Funanan Mix).

I just read an interview for a german mag where Diplo stated wursting dancehall wouldnt be cool at the moment what makes his work revolutonary. Hm. I come across stuff like that daily man. Might be Diplo started the trend (??) but Ghislain Poirier is doing it, Modeselektor, Terry Lynn and Phred do it. Dubstep and Grime have this influence like every second new british genre. So it aint that revolutionary and its definitely cool at the moment.

That aside, the album aint disappointing. Dont know if it’ll make my personal album of the year, but yeah. I dont really find stuff on it that tops Hold The Line, but Anything Goes is fire, Pon de Floor is porn, When You hear the bassline, Jump Up, Bruk Out,… 90% dopeness.  Only Keep It Goin Louder sucks big time due to being a commercial chart fighter with autotune under the wings. I defffnitly like hands in the air techno crap, but they fucked it up. Businesswise it makes good sense of course.

I didnt think I’d blog about Michael Jackson on schakkerhart.com once, but this was a man who influenced and ispired nearly every genre of music existing. I was hell of a fan myself when I was little. Somebody in the neighbourhood just started playing “Beat it”, I’m sure even after all that mad ugly stories about him millions will be mourning. He was defffnitily one of the most influencing and best musicians of the last 100 years.

Most people dont even know where Cape Verde is and now there music is poppin up. Why? Hm I guess Radioclit listened to some Buraka Som Sistema and checked the neighboring countries for something to redo theirselfes. What they did on their “Fu (Na Na Na) Mix” is actually the same Buraka Som Sistema did to Angolas Kuduro. You take the original music and mix it with fitting, high tech western music till it passes the bouncer. Since Lissabons Kuduro scene is made up of as many Cape Verdians as Angolans (the countrys are connected since they shared a colonial occupant), I guess theyd go bananas over some pimped out Funana too. The only western guys who did that before is Schlachthof Bronx from Munich far as I know.

Radioclit put some Pitbull & Lil Jon, Grime (Skepta & Wiley), Soca, Speed Merengue and whatever they felt was uptempo enough to the Funana tracks. It has the same effect as Buraka Som Sistema puttin some electro and dubstep to Kuduro in their production. It puts the pill in the cake. Talkin about pills: If you took an X pill the last month, the mix will bring it back.

 
Original Funana is based on two main instruments. The ferro, a metal stick with notches, scraped for the percussion and the accordion, called gaita. Drums and guitars get added. Its pretty monoton and repetitive what makes it hypnotising and right up my alley. I saw Ferro Gaita, one of the big bands, while I was in the city of Tarrafal and had a ball.

The football version of the song marked another success for the funky pussy doctor, becomming the official hymn of Hertha BSC’s championship ambitions. The only comparison John found for our mash up from hell was Teki Latex from France who rapped on a hardcore tune once, too. To the author “German rap seems to work with gabba because the menacing intonation of the language matches the unrelenting techno beat. But French rapping over a hardcore soundtrack is pretty jarring.” While we only scared the shit out of him, French Hakke Rap is “more painful than listening to Jonathan Ross read every single word in the Oxford English Dictionary between “qwerty” and “saar”.” I don’t know who this Jonathan guy is, but believe it would be painful too if I tried to pronounce those words. Kwörtie? Imma keep rapping in German so we keep the frigheting harshness and The Guardian keeps liking our music.

Again, I love it when a plan comes together. Yea our language might sound harsh to some. Yea, my rap style doesnt really make it a lullaby neither. Mike Skinner is spending more times on Twitter than on the streets today. Okay, he got an iPhone so may be he combines the two. The outcome of months of heavy twittering is Mike Skinner giving out his newest work for free, right there on Twitter. Nope, that might not be the breaktrough concept for your up&comming emotional skinhead electro ska band, but yes, it once again shows that Mr. /skinnermike is a man of his time. Choosing swine flu as the topic for his “single” might be a sign of that, too.

Mike even stepped his Twitter game up by putting together new musical projects over there. Chantelle Fiddy says on her blog that she does some mysterious projects with Mike Skinner via Twitter. One outcome will be a song with Giggs (read Chantelle Fiddy’s World of Whatever).

So lets get to the tracks on The Twitter. Dont know if they will be on the upcoming last The Streets album Computers and Blues, sice I dont follow as much as he tweets. Mike Skinner told me last year when I interviewed him for Raveline magazine, that hes planning to go in that mash up direction a bit more that keeps clubs and blogs crazy at the moment. Dubstep, Electro, stuff like that.. We were at one that current mash ups by famous(!) artists is most of the time too commercial and without substace, but hey, Mike Skinner might be the right guy to change that.

Some of his new tracks show how he’s really takin that direction, still overall its the Skinner you love to hate. Some melancholic tunes („A Blip On A Screen“ or „Lovelight of my Life“), some faster tracks where he captures the irony of it all („David Hassles“). „I Love My iPhone“ has a dubstep side to it, „Skills On Toast“ features a bumping bass and would have its place on a grime album.

The mixture of fast and slow, melancholic tracks is nice and one thing that might really be like on The Streets’ first album, as promised. Banjos and guitars are nice elements too („Outside, Inside“ and „See if they Salute“), Mike Skinner is playing around in the studio and lets you be a part of it. The tracks are anything but pointless trials though.
